Perth Airport Blues
December 25th, 2007 by Mark Griffin | Filed under Griffs View.Well made my way to the airport ok and on arrival found that the long term parking now has been moved to an area adjacent to the normal entry and poorly sign posted to say the least. At 10.30 pm there was little traffic so i was able to pull up, reverse and make my way in to long term parking. To my surprise there was only 4 empty bays and the one I decided on had a distant view of the terminal. My first thoughts are thank god its not day time and 40′c or raining.
Luckily I consider my self able and fit so the 10 min stroll with the bags is not a big deal, but for one second imagine you are with small children, or you are elderly. There were no luggage trolleys anywhere, no undercover path if the elements required it or a shuttle service for those in need. I’m not impressed at all but Perth Airport is an ongoing embarrassment anyway in so many areas. What person decided this was a good idea probably does not have to use the facility.
Inside the terminal its quiet and I check in quickly and make my way upstairs. To my surprise some of the shops are closed including the news agent so a magazine is out for now. I just don’t get it there are flights leaving and the shops are closed.
I make my way through customs and on to the departure gates. While passing by duty free I notice Ben Cousins, who is taking the other flight to Tokyo Narita [probably connecting to the USA for another rehab visit]. I miss him taking the field for the Eagles, what a champion.
Again the facilities at this time of night are unclean and outlets are short staffed. Oh and still no Wi-Fi access, really we should be doing so much better than this. This state ( Western Australia) has an economy that is booming at the moment mainly due to the mining industry and yet the International Airport, our gateway to the world and the first place visitors see is so far behind even other airports around Australia its hard to make excuses.
Well there is the boarding call, time to go!
