The race is on … put a name to your Facebook

Get ready for the great Facebook land grab – at 2pm on Saturday, the social networking site will allow members to register their own user names to make it easier for others to find their pages.

The new system – already offered by MySpace and Twitter – will give people a simple, unique address, such as http://www.facebook.com/joebloggs, instead of the current system whereby profile pages have a URL with a randomly assigned number such as “www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=123456789″.

Bosses quadruple Facebook crackdown

Businesses are cracking down on social networking sites as managers look for productivity gains during the economic downturn.

AdelaideNow reports figures released by Telstra Business and internet security specialists MessageLabs show employers blocked access to social networking sites four times more often in April this year than they did in June last year.

Facebook users to stay offline for 24 hours in protest

FACEBOOK addicts: it’s time to have sex, eat out, talk to a mate and, most importantly, stay offline.

More than 1.3 million users have vowed to turn their backs on the social networking site tonight for 24 hours in another protest against the revamped layout. Australian users will be among the first to log off at 6pm (AEDT) today, with global users joining at dinner time in each timezone. French resident Boris Kelevra created the site in response to limits put on sending messages and poking, among other changes.

Facebook to buy Twitter

SOCIAL networking company Facebook has recently been in acquisition talks with Twitter, the micro-blogging company, according to a report by the Financial Times.

The negotiations put a valuation of as much as $US500 million ($767 million) on Twitter, which has become one of Silicon Valley’s most closely watched start-ups, the paper said.

The talks, which were first reported by technology news website AllThingsD, were confirmed to the paper by two sources.
