My iPhone 3G
August 31st, 2008 by Mark Griffin | Filed under Tech and Gadgets. After what seemed an eternity since the release of the iPhone 3G on the 11th July 2008, i finally placed my order for the iPhone after watching the plans offered by all carriers here in Australia.
I would have probably signed the Optus plan earlier but they never had any phones in store and you had to pay and wait. No other carrier plans met my needs until the released Virgin plans. Both the 1GB ($70) and 5GB ($100) data plans were good in review and in comparison to the others.
I ordered a white 16GB iPhone late on the 19th August online on the Virgin website. I decided on the Free to V 100/520 w 5GB plan which is exclusive to iPhone 3G. For $100 per month it includes $520 worth of credit and and 5GB of data. Also there is no upfront phone cost or any ongoing handset payments.
A short time later I received the order confirmation with notification they would email me when the order was approved and dispatched.
On 23 August I received an email “Your order has been approved and it’s already on the way to you! It should be in your hot little hands within the next few days.” Yeah now that made me smile and the excitement started.
The iPhone arrived via courier at 11:20am 25 August 2008. As all who have this iPhone know you have to bond with the device and the unboxing is a special thing. Once out of the courier box there was my white 16GB iPhone 3G. As always the boxing from apple is so great, simple but so slick.
I activated the sim card at 2.00pm 25 August 2008 with Virgin over the phone, which took only 5 minutes. I must say, very friendly staff.
Now after having the iPhone for what is now just short of 2 weeks, i admit I’m still smiling. Ive downloaded a bunch of free apps and bought a couple. I have not had any major issues with the phone and the 3g coverage has been great where i live in the city and ok when I visited family in the outer suburbs of Perth.
The only issue would be battery life which could be better, but then again if i just used it as a phone it would probably be much the same as my previous phones.
Not one to re-invent the wheel the I think the words from the iPhone release state exactly how good i think the experience of owning the iPhone actually is.
“Like the original iPhone, it combines three products in one revolutionary phone, a widescreen iPod, and a breakthrough Internet device with rich HTML email and full web browsing. The iPhone 3G redefines what a mobile phone can do-again.”

I didn’t realise the white iPhones were packaged in a white box instead of black! What, if any, type of case/skin have you got for your iPhone?
Yeh the box colours match the iPhone colour. That’s a cool touch. I went for a Jam Jacket silicone case in clear. It was $29.95, just wanted to get something on the day i got the iPhone. Actually its a good case.
