Vodafone iPhone plans

July 9th, 2008 by Mark Griffin | Filed under Tech and Gadgets.

Vodafone has finally announced its iPhone plans, and the news isn’t great — only the most expensive $169 per month plan snags you a ‘free’ 8GB iPhone.

The plans, released and then pulled this morning, are not fully detailed so exact comparisons to the Optus plans are difficult to make. However, the cheapest iPhone specific plan is the $69 Cap which gives you a $310 talk and text credit and gives you 250MB of data per month, however you’ll need to shell out $189 for an 8GB iPhone or $309 for a 16GB iPhone.

A $99 Cap gets you $600 of credit but you’ll still need to pony $99 upfront for an 8GB iPhone, or $219 for the 16GB version, but you’ll get 500MB of data per month included in the plan.

The plans listed all specified on a 24 month contract, with no word on the availability of shorter 12 month contracts or the call costs. However, based on ‘regular’ Vodafone plans users will pay between 44c and 35c for 30 seconds of talk time with a 30c connection, and 25c per SMS.

Vodafone have also refrained from announcing any pre-paid plans, or ‘pre-release’ information.

It makes me want to leave Vodafone for Telstra - if only Telstra would detail their data component of their plans.

When I visited the Telstra Melbourne T-Life store today, they advised me $80 cap plan would give you the 8GB phone for $0, but they could NOT tell me about data. They basically parroted “Next G, 3,5G networks”, then said “Come back Friday”

When I went into a Melbourne CBD Vodafone store, they could tell me nothing

When I went into an Optus store, they gave me the same info as the web site. I asked about data as well but said they did not have any official advisement - and they too said “Come back Friday”

It is all too confusing - even for a tech head like me.
